From 1908 to 1920, Estonian statesman Jaan Poska (1866-1920) resided in this building. The building then became the first Estonian salon, which had a role in the formation of the national elite. At the end of the 1920s, the Italian Embassy moved into the building and in 1930s it became a home for the Estonian Women's Union.

After nationalization, a soviet military support organisation operated in the building. In 1990 the building was left unoccupied. It was then restored on the initiative of the City of Tallinn and was reopened on 24. January, 2008. It now houses the city government's reception rooms and Jaan Poska House Museum.
